Merstham Housing Estate 60th Anniversary

This September we are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Merstham Housing Estate.

Commissioned by the London County Council, building work on Merstham was ongoing throughout most of the 1950’s costing around £2.3m. In today’s money that’s a whopping £75m! Management of the housing estate passed to Raven Housing Trust and the Local Authority in 2002.

To mark the anniversary, we’re hosting a tree planting ceremony and working with local residents to create a Community Photo Archive. The archive will be a permanent record of everyday life in Merstham, from the first families to move in during the 1950’s to the building of new houses and the Merstham Community Hub in recent years. We’re hoping the archive can be kept in the Library or the Community Hub to be accessed by local schools and residents.

If you or your family live, or used to live, in Merstham, we’d welcome any contributions to the archive. Photos or copies can be taken to the Rendezvous Group held at the Merstham Community Hub, Portland Drive every other Thursday 1.30 to 3.30pm. Alternatively, contributions can be sent to Glyn Elliott at Raven Housing Trust, 29 Linkfield Lane, Redhill, Surrey RH1 1SS.

Please provide your name and address and we’ll do our best to return original photos to you. It would be great if you could also include a couple of paragraphs telling us when and where the photo was taken and if you’re happy for these details to be published. Hopefully, with your support, we’ll have enough photos for a display at the Merstham Community Trust Fun Day on 31st August. Thank you in advance.
